Hypertext Narratives
I started this assignment by reading Keeping up appearances. Once I
clicked on the link, a white page opened up with sentences all over it. My
eyes were caught by this sentence
maybe it’s just like that when you’re an adult. When I was trying
to highlight this sentence, I accidentally went over it and more and found
out more text were hidden. The hidden text was colored in white just like
the page’s background that I could not see and I did not there was hidden
text. Now I’m using my cursor on the page and going randomly, there are
more sentences appear in pink font color, but disappear once I remove
them. Nice trick. However, I highlighted the page so I can read because I
was getting confused with the sentences disappearing once I remove my
cursor away from it. After reading the whole story, I was so confused and
the story did not make sense to me. I tried reading only the sentences in
the black font, and it did make more sense that she was talking about
friendship in positive way. Going back to the whole story (with the white
font), it has more details and it describes things in a negative aspect.
I then started reading my body. Once I clicked on the link, a
creepy drawing appeared of a jaw with a tongue sticking out with a word
next to it saying My body and a wunderkammer notes. Clicking on the
drawing picture, it took me to another drawing of a girl with small frames
around parts of her body pointing out the body part’s name. I wasn’t sure
what that meant but the drawing seems also a little creepy to me. Clicking
on this one too, I was directed to another white page this time with a
drawing of only the half bottom of the body with a text under it. Some
sentences in the text were in blue color font and were underline, and each
of them directs me to another page. It was interesting to me how each
would redirect me to another page that talks in more details about
something.
Visiting Paths of memory and painting, I was impressed on the
amount of colored boxes that each contains short texts that had different
font color. Clicking on each text, the whole box switches to a new box. It
was a fun experience to read them and see them changing also by themselves
which I believe there’s a timer that switches one box every a few seconds.
I believe the timing of switching the boxes can be coded better because
while I was reading some of them, they would switch automatically and I
miss half or some of the text.
Starting playing Depression quest, I was caught by interest reading
the game discerption that stated
Depression Quest is a game that deals with living with depression in a
very literal way. However, it concerned me when I read that this game was not meant to be
fun or lighthearted experience. That made me really curious about what
this game is. I clicked on where it said
This link to talk to someone. Upon clicking on it, I was redirecred
to
suicide prevention life line. When I began to play, there was three polaroids two of them were black
and the one in the middle had sun surrounded by clouds. The text under the
polaroids was describing a story that imagines that I am the main
character in it. The story implies that I am confused and probably suffer
from depression by mentioning the feelings and thoughts that some people
have while being depressed. The game gives me options on what to do if I
were put into a certain position. Very choice leads to a different result.
My experience playing this game was very interesting. It gave me a lot of
insight on how a person who suffers from depression might think, feel, and
act in certain situations or social interaction. It also made me
understand how depression can take control of a person’s decisions that
they might end up making mistakes. What I took from it that depression
should not be overlooked; in other words a person who might think they
have depression or the people close to that person should do something to
help to prevent their condition from developing to a larger problem that
can lead to suicide.
